Ian Kirby
Kirbs Driving School
My name is Ian Kirby and I’ve been teaching people to drive since becoming an Approved Driving Instructor following intensive training in 2008.
If you’re looking for a positive learning experience which is fun, safe and supportive then you’re in the right place.

The car:
Renault Clio – petrol – 1 litre

The first thing to know about me is I love my job. It feels a privilege and a pleasure to support my pupils in gaining the confidence and skills to set themselves up for a lifetime of happy driving.
The second thing to know is my lessons are fun and light-hearted and I aim to take the stress out of what can otherwise be a challenging experience. I’m confident my pupils leave with a sense of having enjoyed the process of acquiring skills that enabled them not only to pass their test successfully but also to feel confident, safe and happy on the road going forwards.
The vast majority of people coming to me are youngsters making the transition to adulthood and I’m pleased to support them in this particular way – I remember well the feeling of freedom it gave me at this stage of life. Learning to drive is a skill for life and as such it’s a wonderful opportunity to gain independence and confidence. I pride myself on getting a sense of my pupils’ individual needs and always work at a pace that is tailored to each person so they feel supported and encouraged in an appropriate way.
Now I’m somewhat older I’m of course always pleased to introduce older drivers to the joys of motoring too! I particularly enjoy working with people who feel nervous at the outset – and love seeing the transition to skilled and confident driving.
I give support with theory as well as practical driving tests and provide relevant information and mock tests to help pupils through both stages. We work together to decide the best timing to take the test according to each person’s pace of learning.
I work on the English/Welsh borders (the Marches) covering the areas shown on the map. I’m happy to co-ordinate around pupils’ college and work commitments.
